Lot consists of 2 documents framed together, both dated 1776, authorizing payment for arms. (A) Dated October 21, authorizing 400 pounds to Joshua Porter to enable him to carry on the cannon foundry at Salisbury. Salisbury Furnace was erected in 1748 and seized by the state of Connecticut in 1776. Porter was in charge of operations while Samuel Forbes was ironmaster. By one count they produced almost 850 cannon as well as shot and other ordnance and played an essential part in supplying American forces with arms and supplies. (B) July 12 authorization for pay to "John Mighells of Chatham gunsmith" who had delivered 10 stands of arms for the colony and wanted 34 pounds "to enable him to carry on the business." Mighells may be so far unrecorded as a supplier of arms. CONDITION: Very good. Not examined out of the frame. Documents seem to have been laid down on paper or paper was used to reinforce borders.
