Elegant Civil War photograph album by Lippincott and Company, Philadelphia. Brown leather with gilt title on spine and front cover gilt blind stamped, "Album" and "Presented to David K. Hitchcock / by the / Newton Literary Association / 1865." Large pages set up for 4 CDV photos each, with title page and blank contents page numbered for 120 images. Album contains 80 CDVS with 8 cabinet card images tucked in, 6 loose CDVs and 8 loose cabinet cards. Most are unidentified civilian views, but loose cards include Maj. Gen. Banks, seated, by Fredericks, 2 Southworth and Hawes images of an Assistant Surgeon, standing and seated, with medical staff sword and 1st Lieutenant straps; a 3/4 standing view of a captain with sword by Miller and Rowell, Boston, engraved portrait of Hooker, and bustview of a 1st Lieutenant identified in period in on reverse as "W.G. White 1 Lt Co. K 2d Regt. Kansas Colored Infantry August 19, 1864." This William G. White: enlisted as 1st Lieutenant and commissioned 11/1/63 in Co. K 2nd Kansas Colored Infantry (83rd USCT) and mustered out 10/9/65. The regiment served in the 7th Corps, Dept. of Arkansas and lost 2 officers and 32 enlisted men killed or mortally wounded during its service, including 1 officer and 14 men killed. 55 wounded and 3 missing at the Battle of Jenkins Ferry in 1864. White had service also in the 1st Kansas Colored Infantry (79 USCT.) He was an Illinois native, born 1839 or 1840, and died in Quincy, Illinois, 1/16/1918. His connection with Hitchcock is not known. Hitchcock was a dentist in Newton, Massachusetts, during the Civil War. Ex. Lattimer collection. CONDTION: Very good. Minor scuffing to album. A few pages show unglued edges where a photo was removed. Most images are clear and clean. A few interesting views including 2 African-American children and 2 military views, one a man wearing an officer's cloak coat, another in civilian clothes with forage cap next to him.
