Lot consists of 3 scarce 19th century beaver and 1 20th silk top hats: (A) "B. Soule / Marrietta / Ohio" maker's name embossed on lining. Soule set up business in Marietta in 1853. CONDITION: Good. Wear to some edges, but nap largely intact. Wear to lining, but maker name on underside of crown very good. Tall sweatband in place some gaps in the stitching. Minor creasing. (B) Stovepipe style with straight sides. Made with 4 very small vent holes in the center of the top. CONDITION: Good. Minor creasing. Wear to edges, but good nap. No lining. Tall detached sweatband present. (C) Shorter top hat, Canrobert, Paris, maker/retailer name on underside of crown. CONDITION: Fair to good. Creasing to sides, no sweatband. Top lining with maker name present. Other lining missing. Wear to edges but good nap and binding. Probably late 19th, possibly early 20th century. (D) Silk top hat by Traver-Bird Company, Detroit. CONDITION: Excellent. Good color. Little wear. No creases. Maker logo embossed underside of crown. Minor rubbing to lower edge. Small hole and stain to fabric sweatband. Good color and surface. The first 2, certainly mid-19th century, are particularly scarce examples. These have low survival rates in general from liability to storage and handling damage.
