October 21st, 1786 letter penned by Gen. Henry Knox, Secretary of War, under the Articles of Confederation, asks Governor Smallwood of Maryland for the raising of "one troop of Cavalry of sixty men", in response in part to the recent outbreak of Shay's Rebellion in Massachusetts. Fantastic content that deals with the appointment of officers, recruiting instructions, supplies and acquisition of such, and pay and compensation guidelines. 3 pages of content that features a bold Knox signature. CONDITION: All writing is dark iron ink turned to brown that is very legible Very solid with only slight age toning along the leading edge. No tears with only a small 1" separation at the lower fold line. BRM.
