Order datelined "Valley Forge February 5 1778" ordering Lt. Winchester to pay Lt. Abram Williams 3 pounds and take his receipt for the same on the back of the order. Signed by "Charles Dougherty Lt." Dougherty and Williams were both lieutenants in the 12 Massachusetts at the time. A collector's note on the back of the frame identifies Winchester as "G. Winchester" of Maryland. A better candidate is William Winchester, a lieutenant in the 13th Massachusetts. Both the 12th and 13th were at Valley Forge. CONDITION: Very good. Folds with short separation lines and minor edge losses. Clear, legible ink. A scarce relic of one the most famous and symbolic episodes of the Revolution.
