Letter datelined Reading June 12th 1778 from "Wm. Nichols Senr." to Elias Boudinot Esqr. Commissary General of Prisoners. Nichols notifies him he has sent a letter to Lord Howe "in what a manner the American sea prisoners are used at New York" and thinks he will approve, and that he has also forwarded to Howe a letter sent by Boudinot to Colonel Laurens that was in turn forwarded to him "on the subject of exchange." A collector pencil note identifies Nichols as a British Army captain. The "sea prisoners" may refer to privateer crews, but more likely to American prisoners held in the infamous prison ships floating in New Harbor. Far more Americans died in British jails and prison ships than in battle. The Prison Ship Martyrs' Monument, commemorating more than 11,000 who died aboard those hulks stands in Fort Greene Park. CONDITION: Excellent.
