December 13-15, 2022 Collectible Firearms & Militaria
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 12/14/2022
Gorgets like these were used by officers of the militias that Great Britain relied on for defense of their colonies. This example is engraved on either wing with a panoply of arms with swords, polearms, and flags with a central breastplate, with "GALWAY" on left wing and "MILITIA" on right. Central portion with Georgius Rex crest. Reverse is hallmarked "WB" for William Bond, a Dublin based silversmith from 1784 till 1805. The Galway Militia has an excellent record, and given the working dates of William Bond, this gorget dates from the turbulent late 18th century. CONDITON: Overall very good plus, some tarnishing that could be cleaned by new owner should they wish. Some minor handling marks. Traces of a cleaner, probably Nevrdull or equivalent, visible under folds on rear. EMW
