Manufactured with a 36" half octagon to round barrel in .54 caliber rifled with dovetailed brass bead front sight, and v notch rear sight. Rib underneath barrel to support ramrod as well as 2 iron ramrod ferrules. 1 piece walnut stock with brass mountings including forearm band, ramrod ferrule, lock plate, trigger guard, and buttplate. Cheekpiece on left side of stock. Left side of stock opposite lock bears faint cartouche. CONDITION: Good, with barrel retaining a vast majority of its National Armory Brown finish with scattered freckling and handling marks. Barrel markings are crisp. Gun has been reconverted from percussion back to flintlock, with evidence of chemical aging on lock from rebuilding process as well as heavy burnout present near barrel tang. Stock has had several repairs including pins at wrist, and reattachment of wood near lock. Large crack running the width of the gun near wrist on underside. Mechanically fine. Bore is nearly worn to smooth, with faint traces of rifling remaining. A chance to own a heavily used but repairable example of a unique piece of American history. The Harpers Ferry M1803s were the first of America's armory manufactured rifles, commonly believed to have been used in Lewis and Clark's Expedition as well as the War of 1812.
