Kentucky half stock rifle similar to those made in the southwestern corner of Pennsylvania and southeastern Ohio circa 1850. Octagonal 38" rifled .44 caliber barrel with rifle sights and illegible maker signature. Gun has patent breech percussion ignition system with H. Elwell marked lock and double set trigger control. Curly maple original halfstock with brass hardware including a 4-piece floral engraved patchbox with 5 piercings and a "Keyhole" style finial often used in these areas with a full brass saddle plate and barrel ramrod channel underlay. Rifle has 11 coin silver engraved inlays similar to those used by makers like James Teaff. CONDITION: Overall good with some small brass pins being used to secure brass work and an added nail holding patchbox sideplate. Brass has been cleaned along with some of the inlays. Wood has been cleaned with replaced piece above lock back plate. Nose piece has gap from wood shrinkage. Dark bore with functioning mechanics. A fine looking rifle that probably can easily be maker attributed with some light research. DLM
