Lot consists of 6 items. (A) Pay receipt of Col. Noah Phelps, 8 July 1783. As captain in the Connecticut militia Phelps (1740-1809) played a key role in the taking of Fort Ticonderoga, entering the fort in the guise of a peddler to gain intelligence. He later took part in the battles of Trenton and Princeton. (B) 1-page large folio return of Goose Van Schaick’s 1st New York Regiment of Foot, April 1781, extensive list by company with numbers of officers and men, including those present, sick, on assignment, such as 2 “working at the chain,” presumably the chain across the river since the regiment was at West Point at the time. Organized in early 1777, the regiment served though the war. Signed at bottom by Maj. Graham and Brig. QM JH Wendell. CONDITION: Excellent. (C) April 1783 letter Constitution Island from John Reily, Captain Invalid Regiment to Gen. Hand requesting officers at his upcoming court martial be officers in the camp rather than on the Point. (West Point.) Reily served in the 12th and 3rd Pennsylvania, was WIA Bohampton, New Jersey, April 1777, transferred to Invalids 1780, served until 24 June 1783, possibly a consequence of the court martial. (D) January 1781 West Point document testifying soldier has served his term and allowing 3 days rations. CONDITION: Good. (E) December 1782 list of provisions received at Newburgh from contractors Wadsworth and Carter. Dates and amounts of different provisions. CONDITION: Fair to good. Vertical separation along fold. (F) Short letter dated 1789 by John Joseph Henry asking for names of witnesses in a legal case, “Respublica V. Green.” Henry was from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, served as a rifleman under Arnold in Quebec and spent 9 months on a British prison ship. He studied law after the war and was chief judge in the second district of Pennsylvania. He retired due to recurring illness from his military service and his reminiscences of Arnold’s campaign were published in 1812. CONDITION: Good.
