Lot consists of 6 items: (A) 25 October 1777 Pennsylvania commission for Adam Wilhelm as Captain of a company of foot in the 5th Battalion of Militia, Lancaster County. State seal at upper left, signed “Thos. Wharton Jun. Pres.” lower right. Wharton was chosen as a member of the Committee of Correspondence and the Committee of Safety. Under the new state constitution, which he had a hand in drafting, he was elected President in March 1777, serving until his death in May 1778. CONDITION: Very good. Old paper repair to horizontal seam on reverse. (B) Petition to the Pennsylvania Committee of Safety by Joel Westcoatt, former sergeant in Shee’s battalion for a commission as lieutenant or captain. Commissioned Ensign in the 3rd PA January 1776 and lieutenant in April. Captured at Fort Washington, November 1776. CONDITION: Good. Fully legible. Separations at horizontal folds with tape repairs on reverse. (C) Retained copy of a pass for James Duncan, “soldier in the German Regt.” Handwritten with blanks not filled in, dated January 1779. Docketed on reverse “Coppy Forlow” (copy furlough.) Duncan was private in the 4th Company of the German Regiment, which consisted of companies of German settlers from Pennsylvania and Maryland. It saw action at Trenton, Princeton and the Sullivan Expedition. Duncan’s pass enabled him to travel to “Hagers Town, Washington County, Maryland.” (D) Provisions Return for two companies of the first battalion of rifle men under Col. Ferree, Lancaster County. CONDITION: Very good. Listing by rank of rations issued. Includes an entry for field and staff officers. Sept. 1776. (E) List of provisions drawn by Capt. Carpenter’s company of Ferree’s riflemen. Same date. Location of both given as “Blazing Stare.” CONDITION: Very good. (F) Payroll of Capt. Dehuff’s company in Atlee’s Battalion of Muskestry, September 1776, list of officers, NCOs, musicians, and 52 privates with pay for the month. CONDITION: Very good. Slight edge losses at folds. Minor stains.
