Lot consists of six documents 1784-1846 relating to Pennsylvania militia, including early Indian campaigns and the Whiskey Rebellion. (A) January 8, 1795 letter by Timothy Pickering, Secretary of War, to Pressley Neville, "Paymaster of the Militia Army...respecting the pay of the Pennsylvania militia employed in the late expedition against the Insurgents." Pickering responds that pay and service should be commensurate, pay starting on the day they were assembled in units, large or small, at their points of rendezvous. "The principle now mentioned will apply to the militia of all the states in like manner employed." CONDITION: Excellent. (B) 1794 forage order from Lt. William Kidde authorizing waggoner "in the late western expedition for the Philada. Volunteer Rifle Company." CONDITION: Excellent. (C) 1785 letter to the Pennsylvania Comptroller General from John Gloninger of Lancaster County regarding militia fines collected by Colonel Orth, but not accounted for. CONDITION: Excellent. (D) 1802 Letter from John Gloninger, Brigade Inspector 1st Brigade, Berks and Dauphin Counties, summoning captains of the 2nd Battalion of Col. Elder's regiment to meet and elect a Major. CONDITION: Excellent. (E) May 1815 return of the First Battalion 7th Regiment Pennsylvania Militia listing fines for absentees. Individuals with amounts of fine listed by company. CONDITION: Very good. Minor losses. (E) 1846 "Bond for Arms and Military Stores" signed for "Sixty muskets, one sword, sixteen old muskets" and corresponding equipment issued to the "Junior Artillerists." One of those signing the bond is Frederick Fritz, listing himself as Captain. An interesting insight into the mechanics of forming a militia company. CONDITION: Excellent. (F) Undated 20th century preprinted "Emergency Order" for Quarters Company C, 2nd Regt. 1st Brigade, NGP to assemble uniformed and with certain gear. Likely kept on hand for emergency use as needed. CONDITION: Fair. Soiling, creases, small holes or burn marks.
