US Model 1807 Type II flintlock marital pistol manufactured by Springfield and dated 1818 with an estimated 1,000 total made, and only approximately 600 manufactured in this configuration with the wide reinforced hammer. Typically designated as the 1807/18 by collectors, but also designated the 1807/17 in some sources. The short life on these martial pistols is due to the punishing recoil and the large caliber, with US martial pistols being changed to .54 caliber in 1808, when production was stopped and resumed in 1817 to use the remainder of the leftover parts. 10 - 1/2" barrel in .69 caliber smoothbore with integral brass blade front sight on Wickham style barrel band. 1-piece walnut stock bearing "S" and "EJ" cartouches on left stock flat opposite lock. Iron mountings including lock retention plate, trigger guard, butt, and reinforcement in grip. Barrel is dated 1818 near breech with "P / (eagle) / V" on left side above woodline. Inspected "EA" forward of trigger. Expertly reconverted lock is marked with US armory eagle forward of cock with "SPRING / FIELD / 1818" behind cock. CONDITION: Very good as heavily polished back to National Armory Bright and expertly reconverted back to flint with areas of minor freckling throughout. Stock is excellent with minor handling marks and no major signs of distress. Mechanically fine, with 2 crisp stops at half and full cock. Bore is dark. A must have for a US Martial Pistol collection as it was the second martial pistol produced at a national armory as well as the largest.
