Originally manufactured at the Izhevsk arsenal in 1945, this M38 carbine exhibits unique features not found on standard Mosin Nagant production rifles. Consignor states that this example was 1 of only possibly presentation 3 produced, and was purchased by a Canadian officer in East Germany who brought it into Canada and subsequently imported it into the United States. The receiver is stamped "1945r" above the Izhevsk arsenal symbol, with various Russian proofs stamped overall. Underside of barrel is electro-penciled and appears to read "DATEAMHEEST NH". Bolt as been shortened, turned down, as well as flattened on the bottom. Stock exhibits a cutout, similar to that found on Mauser pattern rifles, to accommodate the bolt, while the buttstock exhibits a relief carved State Emblem of the Soviet Union insignia. Left side of buttstock bears a deeply carved diamond above the serial number, with the top of the stock carved with a "3". Barrel bands, barrel band retaining springs, and buttplate have been replaced and are comprised of brass, with the bands exhibiting areas of hand made notches and crosshatching around the bands. Upper handguard has had some material removed to accommodate the barrel bands. Rear sight leaf has been ground and renumbered. CONDITION: Metal components retain the majority of their arsenal applied blue finish, exhibiting some scattered areas of wear, some scattered superficial marks from handling and storage, as well as areas of light surface oxidation overall. Bright bore, exhibiting strong rifling throughout. Stock is excellent, exhibiting few mild marks from storage and handling. A unique Russian M38 carbine.
