Circa 1848-1860s. 8 - 1/8" spear point blade marked "I*XL" on ricasso, and "G. WOSTENHOLM & SON, WASHINGTON WORKS, SHEFFIELD" on face of blade. Beautifully textured "popcorn" stag scales with a plain pointed-end escutcheon on the obverse and nickel silver reinforced guard. 13" overall length. Original red morocco leather sheath decorated with edging and "I*XL" in gold leaf, nickel silver mounts. CONDITION: The blade with scattered spotting, little sign of sharpening but 1 notable chip along the edge; the handle in excellent condition. Sheath with frog stud missing, tip of sheath dented, leather surface with considerable scuffing. A better than average example of a fairly large I*XL bowie. Formerly part of the Tommie Jones collection.
