Circa 1860s. 6 - 1/2" double edged dagger blade is stamped on its ricasso "MANSON, SHEFFIELD", and the obverse is etched with scrollwork and the words "NEVER DRAW ME WITHOUT REASON NOR SHEATH ME WITHOUT HONOR". Nickel silver cutlery style handle with scrollwork theme, ball end guard. 11 - 3/8" overall length. No sheath. CONDITION: Blade in very good condition with signs of sharpening and light pitting, the etch clearer in some areas than others. Handle cracked in 1 area and appears slightly bent. Typical dirk knife of the type carried by civilians and soldiers alike at about the time of the Civil War. Manson is thought to have been an American importer or retailer, but has not yet been identified. Formerly part of the Tommie Jones collection.
