Circa 1880s-1890s. Large 4 - 1/4" (closed) 3-bladed cattle knife with spear, sheepfoot, and pen blades marked variously "GEORGE WOSTENHOLM I*XL CUTLERY" and "IXL GEORGE WOSTENHOLM CELEBRATED". Premium mother of pearl scales, the obverse of which is engraved "OLD GRIZZLY FROM HIS CUB JIM", and the crest shield engraved "PLACERITAS ARIZ". CONDITION: All blades show sharpening and signs of use, scratches, and scattered pits; reverse handle missing a chip at center pin. Possibly relates to the Arizona ghost town of Placerita and the man who discovered gold veins there during the 1880s, "Grizzly" Callen. An exhibition grade English folding knife that has seen hard use – what a story it could tell! Formerly part of the Tommie Jones collection.
