Circa 1850s-1860s. 8 - 1/4" clip point blade etched "PROTECTOR PERSONAL" in a riband surrounded by scrollwork; the ricasso stamped "MARSH BROS. & CO'S CELEBRATED CUTLERY". Unusual and attractive turned handle of ivory and dark horn, oval nickel silver escutcheon on obverse, nickel silver guard. 13 - 1/2" overall length. With original nickel silver mounted black morocco leather sheath. CONDITION: Blade appears unsharpened with scattered spidering across both sides. Handle with scattered cracks but appearing solid and stable. Sheath body somewhat scuffed, with frog stud missing from upper mount. Starting as Marshes & Shepherd, this firm changed their name to Marsh Brothers & Co. in 1850. A well-known Sheffield cutlery manufacturer who produced many bowie and dirk knives for the American market. Formerly part of the Tommie Jones collection.
