Circa 1846-1850s. 9 - 1/2” clip point blade with the figure of Mexican War hero Zachary Taylor atop his horse "Old Whitey" on the obverse ricasso, the face of the blade with various stampings including "G. WOSTENHOLM & SON WASHINGTON WORKS, THE REAL I*XL KNIFE" in a riband, "THE HUNTER'S COMPANION", and the partially illegible words "NONE ARE GENUINE BUT THOSE MARKED I*XL". Nickel silver frame handle with mother of pearl scales, oval escutcheon on obverse, S-guard of nickel silver. 14 - 7/16” overall. Morocco leather sheath with nickel silver tip has been sewn inside a sturdier oversheath, likely by the original owner. CONDITION: The blade with moderate sharpening and 2 tiny nicks, darkened with age and scattered spotting. Handle frame and guard also dark with tarnish, pearl scales are in excellent condition. Sheath is missing its tip. Accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity from the Antique Bowie Knife Association, dated 1980. A fine IXL knife of classic form, with desirable blade markings. Formerly part of the Tommie Jones collection.
