Circa 1870s-1880s. Large 8 - 7/16” clip point blade with fuller along spine on both sides, marked on ricasso "JOSEPH HAYWOOD & [SON], MAKERS, SHEFFIE[LD]" and on reverse ricasso with a teapot, the company's trademark. Finely checkered ivory handle scales without visible pins, nickel silver guard and pommel, thick brass liners. Locking blade is released with ring pull on a lever located adjacent to the guard; blade protrudes from handle when closed. CONDITION: Blade with little sign of sharpening or use, scattered light spotting only; handle is in excellent condition with replaced ring on lock release. Accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity from the Antique Bowie Knife Association, dated 1979, and an oil-on-canvas painting of this knife, with a painting record on back identifying the artist as Barbara Black, painted for Tommie Jones, and with some religious notation, citing Hebrews 4:12. An exceptionally fine example of a late 19th century style English folding bowie knife. Formerly part of the Tommie Jones collection.
