Produced from 1877 to 1881 by the Sharps Rifle Company using a hammerless falling block design by Hugo Borchardt. These military configuration rifles were produced for various state militias and foreign governments, with this example stamped "SC" on the tang, possibly for South Carolina who purchased 100 rifles in 1879. Standard 32" round barrel chambered in .45-70 with 1-line Sharps address and script "Old Reliable" trademark. Blade front sight and correct ladder rear sight. Plain walnut stock marked with script "LB" cartouche and fit with a checkered steel butt plate. Matching full length walnut forend marked with a boxed "P" and retained by 2 bands. CONDITION: Very good overall. Blued finish has largely drifted to a rich brown patina with some areas of older oxidation, especially on the butt plate. Stocks are very good with some scattered impressions and a repaired chip at the tang. Strong bore with evidence of period black powder ammunition use. No cleaning rod present. BAS
