Circa 1830s Federal Period eagle head pommel sword. The sword features a curved blade with single fuller and narrow ricasso. The blade is decorated for about half its length with foliate and patriotic motifs. Ornamentation includes scroll work which flanks a panoply of arms topped with a liberty cap on the obverse, and scrollwork that flanks a flag on the reverse. Shield languets which feature a cast helmet and palmette. Crossguard which terminates with an eagle head quillon and a P-shaped knucklebow that is nicely cast with floral motifs. Knucklebow connects to the eagle head just under the open beak. The eagle head features a pronounced forehead with plumage that flows back and down the backstrap, and morphs into rococo designs before meeting the decorated brass ferrule. Bone grip is nicely fluted. No visible maker mark, but in the style of a Simon Helvig & Son produced sword. The sword is accompanied by several pieces of paperwork which connect the sword to Captain William Bartlett, who served in the Massachusetts Militia during the Revolutionary War. The paperwork includes Applications for Membership in the Daughters of the American Revolution, as well as an onionskin copy of his pension record. CONDITION: The blade exhibits a gray patina with freckling and other blemishes. Decorations are muted but slightly visible. Hilt exhibits a pleasant patina with scattered blemishes from age and handling. The hilt is loose and produces a wobble when handled.
