US Federal Period saber with eagle head pommel. The curved blade features a single, wide fuller that is halted by the narrow ricasso. Neatly fire blued panels adorn the blade for about half of its length. The panels are ornamented with engraved with foliate and patriotic motifs. The obverse features 3 decorations, which includes 2 sections of scrollwork that flank a stand of arms topped with a liberty cap. The reverse features a stand of arms, which includes artillery and drums, followed by 2 sections of scroll work. All of the decorations are nicely gold inlaid. The panel terminates with fire blued scrollwork. Hilt features a brass guard which terminates with a flat circular quillon and guard with 5-ball decoration. The guard morphs into the P-shaped knucklebow which features identical 5-ball decoration. The knucklebow connects to the eagle head under the beak. Brass ferrules secure the bone grip which is nicely fluted. The saber is complete with its leather scabbard that features scalloped brass mounts. The upper and middle mount each accommodate a carry ring and all mounts feature double line decoration. Brass stud on upper mount. CONDITION: The blade exhibits a light patina and retains a decent amount of fire blued finish and gold inlay. Scattered freckling and other blemishes throughout its length. The brass hilt exhibits a dark patina with scattered marks from handling and age. Grip exhibits handling wear with a few hairline cracks. Scabbard remains intact with tight seam and scattered blemishes including scuffs, creases, and cracks. Drag and middle mount are loose. Crack under upper mount. Mounts exhibit a dark patina that matches the hilt. A nice example of a Federal Period saber.
