Manufactured in 1893 at the end of the trapdoor era, the Model 1888 was the last of the standard issue .45-70 single shot rifles. Standard configuration with 32 - 5/8" round barrel proofed at the breech "V / P / (Eagle Head) / P". Hooded blade front sight and "R" marked Buffington rear sight. Low arch breech block marked "US / MODEL / 1884". Stocked in walnut with a boxed script "SWP / 1893" cartouche, encircled "P" firing proof, stamped "1 / G / 29" and "87 / 5" unit or rack markings. Steel mounts include 2 "U" marked barrel bands, 1-piece trigger guard, "US" marked trap butt, and characteristic rod bayonet. CONDITION: Very good. Barrel and other blued components exhibit a pleasing plum patina with some traces of arsenal finish. The sight hood appears to be a replacement retaining significantly more brilliant blued finish. Stock is lightly sanded with marking still legible and some dings throughout. Very fine bright bore and crisp mechanics. BAS
