Fine example of a Springfield Model 1880 hunting knife. The knife was designed as a multi-use tool for soldiers and could be used as a traditional knife, as well as an entrenching tool. This example is in standard configuration with single edged spearpoint blade, a brass guard, wood handle, and is complete with its original leather scabbard with brass hook. The brass guard is stamped "U.S. / Springfield" on the obverse and "833" on the reverse. The scabbard was mis-struck and is stamped "…TERVILET / …SENAL" on the leather and “WATERVILET / ARSENAL” on the brass belt hook. CONDITION: Blade remains bright with scattered light blemishes. The walnut handle is clean but displays handling wear. The markings remain crisp, and the guard exhibits a nice patina. Sheath is fine and displays scattered scuffs and scratches along with leather cracking towards the brass belt hook. Brass components of scabbard exhibit a pleasing patina. A clean example of a Springfield hunting knife.
