The ricasso is marked "U.S.N. / D.R. / 1862" on the obverse and "“MADE BY / AMES MFG Co / CHICOPEE / MASS” contained in the correct Ames scroll pattern. The Ames maker mark is over stamped with an upside-down N.J." Inspector stamp indicates Daniel Reynolds, who inspected naval cutlasses. Standard brass guard is heavy sheet brass riveted to the knucklebow which was often referred to as the "soup ladle" due to its cup shape. Underside of quillon area is stamped "20M / 541". Grip is of grooved wood that is wrapped with leather. No twisted brass wire. Brass pommel with tiered cap. The cutlass is complete with its riveted leather scabbard that features a brass belt stud. CONDITION: The blade remains bright with crisp markings. Scattered areas of freckling throughout its length with scattered edge wear.
