German Gewehr 98 Mauser rifle originally made at Spandau Arsenal in 1917 with Spandau receiver proofs. This particular gun was then reworked, most likely at Amberg Arsenal, with bolt showing Amberg proofs and renumbered (1197) to match the receiver, trigger guard, and trigger guard screws. Bolt has original serial number of 18 stamped on all bolt parts. Receiver is marked with a star, original Spandau stamp, and 1917 date with "18" date marking beside 1917 with Prussian firing proof. These hand fitted rifles are known as "Sterngewehrs" (Star Rifles). This rifle goes on to be further used and is stamped below sight "S/42G" with 2 "WaA217" Waffenampt markings indicating a rebuild in 1935 at Mauser-Werke Borsigwalde for use by the Third Reich, explaining the 98k style rear sight and sling swivel band. Rifle has full military walnut stock with mismatched numbered buttplate, front band and replaced middle band. "A" marking on left side of stock. Stock has traces of original unit stamps on right stock with receiver serial number stamped below receiver on left side. No visible import marks. A great Gewehr 98. CONDITION: Arsenal finish on metal turning a plum patina with some light surface corrosion. Wood has been cleaned with light coat of oil applied. Good bore and mechanics. DLM
