Produced under contract by Whitney as an improved M1816 pattern musket. From the first contract dated "1826" on the tang with a 42" barrel marked at the breech with sunken intaglio "P" proof, "US / ET" inspector mark for Elisha Tobey, "MS" Massachusetts ownership mark, and "1077" number. Lock is second contact and has been converted to percussion in the Belgian cone in barrel style. Lock plate marked in the center with a "US" with a crossed arrow and branch, over "E. WHITNEY", and with "NEW / HAVEN / 1834" at the tail. Stocked in walnut with script cartouche on the left flat. Standard iron mounts including 3 spring retained bands and a "US" marked butt plate. CONDITION: Very good. Iron components have been cleaned at some point, exhibiting a pleasing salt and pepper patina. Stock has some minor bruises, with surfaces cleaned with some added finish. Mechanically fine. BAS
