Approximately 5,000 built with this example manufactured in 1885 at the end of production. Blued cadet length barrel with standard proofs over breech, chambered in .45-70 with blade front sight and upgraded Buffington rifle rear sight. Low arch breech block marked "U.S. / MODEL / 1873" with lock plate bearing "U.S. / SPRINGFIELD" and federal eagle markings. Short comb full length walnut stock with script "SWP / 1892" cartouche and stamped "C13" unit/rack number. Blue steel mounts including 2 spring retained barrel bands, 2-piece trigger guard, and "US" marked butt plate. Springfield Research Service lists serial number 283492 as being turned in by Company H of 3rd Kentucky Volunteer Infantry in 1898. CONDITION: Fine. Significant amounts of arsenal finishes are retained with areas drifting to a plum gray patina. Stock has some expected dings and a small painted collection label at the wrist.
