Springfield Model 1842 percussion musket, dated 1854. 42" round barrel in .69 caliber smoothbore with brass blade front sight integral to double strapped barrel band. Barrel is dated 1854 near breech with "VP" proof on left side above wood line. Trumpet head full-length ramrod is present and possibly the original. 1-piece plain walnut stock in 3-barrel band musket configuration complete with US marked military buttplate. Stock is marked "44" near lock retaining plate (possibly a rack number) with "JS" cartouche on left stock flat opposite lock. CONDITION: Very good, with iron components turned a speckled brown patina with darkness and abrasion toward breech from use. Stock is excellent as lightly cleaned with light handling marks and repaired small crack near lock tail. Mechanically fine. Bore is frosted with scattered areas of brightness remaining.
