Manufactured in 1888 in the first configuration pattern. Standard cadet length barrel chambered in .45-70 with faint proofs over the breech, blade front sight, and "R" marked Buffington rear sight. Low arch breech block marked "US / MODEL / 1884". Correct replacement cadet stock with "JSA / 1895" cartouche and 3 stamped and painted "477" rack numbers. Rifle was likely one of 1,800 shortened to cadet length at this date. CONDITION: Very good overall. Metal components have largely turned to an even plum gray patina with some traces of arsenal finish. Stock has impressions throughout as is typical with military service rifles. Very strong bore. Mechanically fine. BAS
