US Model 1840 musket manufactured on contract for the US government by Nippes, dated 1843. Altered by Leman circa 1861-1862 for use in the Civil War for the US government. Alteration included fitting with a converted lock to percussion from flintlock, installation of chambered breech complete with nipple, bolster, and cleanout screw, rifling, and installation of a M1858 rear sight. 1 piece walnut stock and forearm with 3 barrel bands and US marked buttplate. Left flat of stock is marked with JH and WAT cartouches. Buttplate is marked with a "3" near butt, likely a rack number. CONDITION: Very good, as polished to bright long ago with light brown freckled patina forming over the top. Rear sight is not present. Stock is very good as lightly sanded and finish added with consistent light handling marks throughout, and no major cracks. Mechanically fine. Bore is dark with visible rifling.
