With the pressing need for arms at the start of the Civil War, many older arms were converted to meet needs. Originally produced in 1828 by M. T. Wickham as an M1816 flintlock musket, this rifle appears to have been converted to percussion and rifled by Hewes and Phillips circa 1861 to 1862 for the state of New Jersey bearing an "N.J" surcharge. 42" 3 groove rifled barrel rifle with blade front sight and 3-position rifle rear sight. Bolster style percussion conversion with lock marked in the center "US" over "M. T. Wickham in an arc and vertically at the tail "PHILA / 1828". Stock is full length walnut with an illegible inspector cartouche and standard M1816 iron mounts. CONDITION: Very good. Iron components exhibit a silvery brown patina with some areas of oxidation, especially on the lock. Stock has been lightly cleaned with some scattered impressions. Fine strong bore. Hammer is cracked, appearing stable. Otherwise mechanically fine. BAS
