Gewehr 98 manufactured at the Amberg arsenal in 1917. The receiver is stamped with a crown over "AMBERG / 1917" with Imperial German arsenal proofs present on the right and an Amberg rampant lion proof present on the left. Barrel bears an "S" stamp, indicating conversion for spitzer ammunition. Stock bears several Imperial proofs, with "EWB" branded on the right side of the butt, indicating issue to the EinwhonerWehr Bayern (Bavarian Civil Defense). Receiver, bolt assembly, buttplate, and barrel band retaining springs are in-the-white, with remaining components being blued. All numbers are matching with the exception of the buttplate and rear trigger guard screw, which are mismatched. Buttplate bears a small droop eagle over "214" waffenamt. Rifle is fitted with unmarked period brown leather sling. CONDITION: Receiver, bolt assembly, and barrel band retaining springs are excellent as lightly cleaned and polished, exhibiting some light spots of surface oxidation and age related discoloration. Blued components are excellent, exhibiting some spots of light surface oxidation, but are otherwise fine. Excellent bore, exhibiting well defined lands and grooves throughout. Stock has been very light sanded and revarnished at one point in time, retaining well defined proofs overall. Sling is very good. A extremely attractive Gewehr 98 rifle that used by Imperial Germany during World War I and subsequently utilized by the Bavarian Civil Defense.
