Series 4 Type 38 carbine manufactured at the Nagoya arsenal. The receiver exhibits a partially defaced chrysanthemum above Kanji characters denoting the model designation "Type 99" over the chamber, with a Series 4 stamp followed by the serial number and Nagoya insignia present on the left side. Metal components are blued, while the 2-piece stock and upper handguard are comprised of solid wood. Metal components exhibit a lustrous blue finish overall (which is proper for Series 4 Nagoya carbines), while the wood furniture is varnished. Receiver is mounted with a dust cover as well as a canvas web sling. Matching numbers are present on the receiver, bolt body, safety knob, firing pin, floorplate, as well as on the underside of the bayonet lug. Interestingly, the dust cover bears the serial number "731", just 1 digit away from the receiver's serial number. CONDITION: Metal components retain bountiful amounts their arsenal applied blue finish, exhibiting few minor areas of wear and some minor handling marks showing through to silvering and gray patina. Strikes to chrysanthemum appear to exhibit some bluing in the strike marks, but given the distention of stampings on the receiver and the feathering of the bluing, it is of the opinion of this cataloger that the finish is original. Dust cover exhibits surface minor oxidation overall. Mirror bore, exhibiting well defined rifling throughout. Stock shows some scattered marks and impressions from storage and handling but is otherwise fine. Sling is excellent. A very fine example of a Nagoya arsenal Series 4 production Type 38 carbine that would be difficult to upgrade from.
