Mid-late 18th century pewter charger engraved to a Revolutionary War soldier and prominent Philadelphian Samuel Morris. The charger has a diameter of 16 - 1/2" inches and is engraved "This plate belonged to / Samuel and Rebecca Morris / who were married in / Christ Church, Philadelphia / December 1755" on the front. The reverse is stamped "SUPERFINE / HARD METAL / M / SR / MADE IN LONDON". “Made in London” identified where the pewter was supposedly made, but this marking was also applied by many provincial pewterers, and indeed even by some on mainland Europe. Non-London pewterers used it because London pewter was considered to be superior. The words "ENGLAND" or "ENGLISH PEWTER" were added to these stamps after 1891. Samuel Morris married Rebecca Wistar and served as captain of the First Troop of Philadelphia City Cavalry. Morris and the troop reported for duty in the Continental Army and served through the campaign of 1776–77, seeing action in the battles of Trenton and Princeton. CONDITION: The charger exhibits blemishes with a scattered patina. Letters have added contrast. A very nice charger from a prominent Pennsylvanian and American Revolutionary War figure.
