James Lowe is listed an apprentice to John Brooke in 1717. He became free of the Gunmaker's Company in 1724. James is then listed as a gunsmith at Cannon Row, Westminster in 1749. The last reference as James working is 1753. The swamped round barrel is engraved "JAMES LOWE LONDON" on top, surrounded by a panel with teardrop. Breech section and tang have engraved designs. Breech marked with private London proofs and a maker's mark. The fine lock is convex and features engraved borders. Center engraved with a shell and scrolls with a banner that reads "JAS. LOWE". Engraved brass furniture including ornate pierced sideplate, pommel cap with scalloped skirt and grotesque mask cap, balustered ramrod ferrules, and trigger guard terminating in a shell. Walnut stock in the classic and attractive Georgian form. Relief shell design surrounding the barrel tang and relief panels around lock and sideplate. Complete with its original ramrod. CONDITION: Barrel retains a brown patina. Lock retains a grey/brown patina and is its original flintlock configuration, functions well. Markings excellent. Brass retains a pleasing mustard patina with some light wear and scattered marks. Stock shows some scattered marks from use. A very nice pre-French and Indian War British Pistol. DMG
