This fine silver mounted pistol had silver hallmark dates for 1780 and was made by William Stanton, who is recorded at 1 Pleasant Row, Newington, London. The 3-stage barrel features a flared and turned cannon muzzle. The octagonal section of barrel is engraved with florals on top 3 flats, near girdle, and marked "London" in script on top. There are 2 Tower private proofs on the left side. Flat, stepped, brass lockplate with light wriggle work engraving around border, bridled pan, swan neck cock, center of plate signed "Stanton". Intricate pierced silver ribbon sideplate with borders and floral motifs. Complete with original wooden ramrod with horn tip. Ramrod retained by a single silver ferrule and feeding into a reinforced silver mouth. Silver trigger guard with a floral in diamond on the bow and an edelweiss and shell finial. The silver hallmarks are for Charles Freeth, Birmingham, 1780. Circassian walnut stock of Georgian form, carved in relief around barrel tang with shell. Silver thumbpiece depicting another edelweiss and a pendant. Silver pommel cap with additional duplicate proofs, and decorated foliate and shell. CONDITION: Overall very good. Brass has a lovely mustard patina with some light polishing marks. Stock is good with some handling marks and a few minor chips; top of lock has a small crack above rear tang. Silver is very good and shows crisp hallmarks. Mechanically fine, bore is excellent. This is an exceptionally fine cannon barrel silver mounted pistol with a brass lock and barrel.
