This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 12/14/2022
Lot consist of two militia documents nicely framed in double sided glass ready to hang. Both illustrate inner workings of the antebellum state militia. (A) 1848 annual return of the enrolled militia in the town of Holliston, Massachusetts, totaling 216 names, with the document opened and matted to show all names. This was at the tail end of the period when all able-bodied adult males, with various restrictions, were considered the enrolled militia and subject to call up. CONDITION: Excellent. (B) February 1859 document from the U.S. Ordnance Office to the Governor of Illinois laying out the allotment of muskets to the state under the terms of the Militia Act. A very interesting explanation of the system whereby the allotment of arms and supplies was made in terms of a number of muskets, with substitution of other arms and accouterments allowed according to proportional value in muskets. The state was allowed 501 muskets that year, less 1 4/13 muskets overdrawn the previous year, leaving 499 9/13 muskets for the state’s 1859 allotment. CONDITION: Excellent. Double glassed with all text visible of the open 4 sided document showing various annotations and calculations for what they wanted to draw.
