Group consists of wartime and post-War photographs and paperwork relating to Horace Phipps (1842-1926) 1st Mass Heavy Artillery, called into the field as infantry by Grant in 1864, with heavy combat experience and losses of 9 officers and 232 enlisted men killed or mortally wounded. Phipps was wounded in action 6/22/64 at Petersburg, having enlisted 8/4/62, reenlisted as a veteran and corporal 12/31/63; mustered out with 7/31/65. Group includes CDV of Phipps with old ink inscription, full standing in uniform, showing veteran chevron, uncased 1/6 plate tintype in civilian clothes seated with an unidentified bearing a resemblance, half length photo in GAR uniform, ninth plate ambrotype in hanging case, missing loop, soldier in cap and uniform, patriotic mat. Paperwork included his 1863 discharge for reenlistment as veteran and his 1865 discharge, 1888 certificate of service, pension certificate, and 1926 newspaper with obituary. Also included is a scarce Harnden express receipt for a package sent to him in 1864, GAR hat insignia, silvered "CV" and wreath had insignia, and French made embroidered looped silver embroidered hunting horn. CONDITION: Very good. 6th plate tintype with crack to glass. Hanging 9th plate missing loop, image light, with solarization. A nice untouched family group from a soldier wounded in action with the Army of the Potomac.
