The AN XIII is the quintessential cavalry pistol of the French during the Napoleonic Wars, with this example having a desirable pre-Waterloo date. Standard configuration with rounded barrel and slightly flattened short sighting plane, "(Crown) / V" proofs visible on barrel and tang, 1811 date offset over breech with an other indistinct proof. Lock with softened "Manuf. Imp. De / Charleville", reinforced cock, brass bridled pan, indistinct proof behind cock. Brass strap with visible seam at top, Brass trigger guard with iron tang. Brass buttcap. Numerous other proofs observed scattered about. Brass tip ramrod a modern replacement. CONDITION: Overall good. Barrel is a fairly even mixture of dove grey and chocolate patina, tipping towards patina. Some filing visible near touchhole. Lock is very good, softened legends as mentioned, with some light peppering and evidence of cleaning. Stock is very good with 1 significant chip on underside of lock exposing internals, 1 crack at sideplate, and a collection of dings on right side of grip. Normal assorted handling marks. Topjaw screw and ramrod replaced. Mechanically fine, bore is very good with a minimum of oxidation. EMW
