For a nearly identical example, see Fig. 377 on page 416 of "American Silver-Hilted Revolutionary and Early Federal Swords, Vol. I" by Daniel D. Hartzler. The sword in the book is attributed to John Ward Gilman of New Hampshire. The slightly curved blade has a single narrow deep fuller along the top on both sides. Engraved "BN 5" on left side of blade, near top. Sand cast silver pierced guard with scalloped edges and decorated with shells and borders. Silver chain a probable replacement. Silver lion head pommel with chased details and applied ruby eyes. Spiraled bone grip. Complete with its original scabbard with silver mounts. Top mount inscribed "JMC". CONDITION: Blade retains a brown patina, heavy pitting towards blade. Hilt retains a pleasing pewter patina. Grip retains a pleasing honey patina, minor chipping on bottom below head. Scabbard missing last 5" and drag. An attractive silver lion pommel sword. DMG
