Dated 1824 on lock with 36" browned barrel in .54 caliber with 7 groove rifling, iron blade front sight, and V notch rifle rear sight. Dated 1824 near breech with "US / P" proofmark and "JN" (John Newbury) inspector marking. 1 piece walnut stock with 3 bright barrel bands, full length trumpet head ramrod, iconic oval implement compartment containing patchworm and disassembly tool, and US marked buttplate. Left flat of stock opposite lock bears "JN" cartouche in an oval. CONDITION: Excellent plus, with barrel retaining nearly all of its original browning with the exception of scattered light handling marks throughout. Barrel bands, ramrod, and lock screw plate all retain their bright polish. Stock is excellent with no major signs of distress and cartouche easily legible. Mechanically fine remaining in its original flint configuration. Bore is bright with crisp rifling. A unique US martial rifle in that virtually all of its production was by contractors outside of the government that also saw use in such US history defining events as the Seminole Wars and the Mexican-American War.
