A very interesting letter penned by Oliver Hazard Perry regarding arson committed by a sailor. The latter is dated December 28, 1813 and is addressed to a store owner, whose store was burned down, possibly by a sailor. Perry writes "be assured sir-if the scoundrel is aboard the flotilla, he shall be given to the Civil Authority to be dealt with according to the law - I have sent after the gunboat and will have an examination as soon as she arrives...". This act of arson was most likely related to the burning of the Canadian town Newark when General George McClure, commander of the American forces in the Niagara area, burned the town before abandoning the west side of the Niagara River. The letter is professionally matted and framed with an etching of Perry, as well as a translation of the document. The frame measures approximately 27 - 1/2" x 13 - 1/2". CONDITION: The letter has yellowed but presents nicely with legible writing. Frame is exquisite and exhibits light handling wear. A very nice letter signed by one of The US Navy's most notable commanders. The letter comes with a James Spence Authentication Full Letter of Authenticity.
