Kentucky style rifle made circa 1800 similar to rifles made in the Upper Susquehanna school by Samuel Baum. 43 - 3/4" smoothbore half octagon .58 caliber barrel with rifle sights. Lock appears to be original flint lock; maker marked "PETER NEWHAxx" with turned tail handmade single trigger. Full curly maple stock with engraved brass hardware including and engraved Upper Susquehanna style comb piece and engraved toeplate. Stock has 16 engraved coin silver inlays with hunter's star and fish escutcheon plates. Buttstock has nicely done dish shaped cheekpiece with back-to-back "C" scroll carving. Gun is missing saddle plate, of which a slight outline remains today. CONDITION: Heavily pitted barrel with cleaned to a silvery patina appearance. Wood has been lightly sanded with dings and usage marks with light coat of Tru-oil added. Some slight burnout around top of lock. No visible signs of any major restoration. Pitted bore with good mechanics. DLM
