The Model 1777 and the following 1777 Corrige An IX (1777 Corrected Year 9) were the standard French longarm during the Napoleonic era for infantry and were produced in mass numbers. This example is in the standard corrected configuration which eschewed the earlier screw fixed front band for a spring retained band, with brass front sight mounted on rear strap of front band. Sling swivels and mid band trigger guard with a period leather sling still attached. Barrel marked "M · 1777" with offset 1808 manufacture date and French proof. Lock with brass pan, bridled frizzen with distinct "corrected" uncurled tip, reinforced cock. Marked in center "Manufre Imp le / de Charleville" with French proofs throughout. Stock with a lightly incised "3" behind sideplate, more clearly carved "P · B ·" on left side of comb, under cheekrest, right side with "B · P ·". Accompanied by appropriate bayonet with an indiscernible proof and "24" on ricasso. CONDITION: Overall good. Metal is largely gunmetal grey with areas of oxidation, oil staining, and mossing; crisp legends. Lock commensurate, bayonet and ramrod tip darker on the whole. Stock with a waxy texture, minor insect holes throughout, heavier towards butt, with a spliced circle on right side of comb, but strong. Sling with some stiffening and crazing, but strong and whole. A nice example. EMW
