Present example is an EIC marked Bess privately made by Barnett, void of any government ordnance marks, and with slightly differing components. India pattern 39" barrel in correct .75 caliber with pin retained barrel, iron ramrod with 3 ferrules, foremost flared. Sling swivel at plain brass trigger guard and above the fore ferrule. Flat lock with incised borders, "(Crown) / 2" under the pan, central EIC marking over 1806 date, Barnett in curve at rear. Plain brass trigger guard without finial, serpentine sideplate with dual lock bolts and a later central screw. Plain brass buttplate. CONDITION: Barrel is largely a smooth chocolate patina with flashes of dove grey and some light peppering. Lock with age related mossing, legends are crisp although Barnett is somewhat difficult to read. Brass is an untouched mellow gold color. Stock with handling marks and associated pings, scratches, etc, throughout, with one repaired crack above rear of lock. Some small pins for retaining barrel appear replaced. Mechanically fine, bore is very good. This date is particularly desirable as it is both pre-War of 1812 and pre-Waterloo, both conflicts where the India pattern saw wide use. EMW
