Model 1903 bolt action rifle repaired/rebuilt by Rock Island Armory between 1919-1924, indicated by its "417821" serial number. Though RIA ceased production of 1903 rifles in July of 1919, the arsenal initiated a substantial repair and rebuild program that included the production of additional receivers, barrels, and other 1903 components. Receiver is stamped "ROCK ISLAND / ARSENAL / MODEL 1903" above the serial number, with the barrel exhibiting "R.I.A. / (Flaming Bomb Ordnance Proof) / 7-18" to the rear of the front sight. Left side of stock bears a faint boxed "D.A.L." cartouche, with the underside of the wrist exhibiting an encircled "P" firing proof. Major metal components exhibit a smooth dark parkerized finish, while the bolt is blued. Furniture is comprised of a Type 5 pattern buttstock mounted with a Type 4 checkered buttplate, and a Type 2 pattern upper handguard. Rear sight exhibits a volley notch and features a dished windage knob and flat elevation knob. Bolt assembly bears "R" stamps and a boxed "72" stamp, indicating manufacture by Remington. Left side of stock exhibits a 3 - 1/2" section of removed wood. Rifle is fitted with a period brown leather sling featuring brass accoutrements. CONDITION: Parkerized components retain the vast majority of their parkerized finish, exhibiting few minor marks from handling and storage overall. Receiver exhibits a few small concentrated areas of pitting beneath the finish. Bore is bright, exhibiting what appears to be very light pitting and retains well defined rifling throughout. Stock exhibits scattered marks and impressions from storage and handling, but is otherwise fine. MLW
