Family archive with accoutrements and rifle of Private John Pross, who enlisted at Little Falls, New York, 6 September 1862 in Co. F, 152nd New York for 3 years at age 36, and transferred to Co. in October 1862. After early service at Washington and in the defenses of Suffolk, Virginia, the unit joined the 2nd Corps, Army of the Potomac, and served with it to the end of the war, losing 303 in killed, wounded and missing in engagements such as Wilderness, Spottsylvania, the North Anna, Cold Harbor, Petersburg, etc. Pross was wounded in the head at Cold Harbor, 11 June 1864, hospitalized for 9 months, but returned to his company in March or April 1865 and mustered out with the regiment 13 July 1865 at Washington, DC. The group consists of Pross's 1864 Springfield with bayonet, 1864 pattern cartridge box, broken bayonet scabbard, cap box, waist belt and oval US plate, mainspring vise, worm, 3 Minie balls, 1 round ball and 1 canister shot, with a tin of pistol caps. CONDITION: Rifle very good, smooth metal with traces of old bluing at breech and muzzle, rubbed plum and pewter between. Clear 1864 lock and barrel dates. Tight wood to metal fit. Wood with a few minor dings, nice finish, light but visible ESA cartouche. Sights bands, springs, ramrod all in place. Mechanism crisp. Bayonet in matching condition with nice blue. Cartridge box shows losses to finish. Latch tab and buckles missing. Tins present. Cap box missing loop and finish loss. Belt plate is arrowback pattern. Belt was cut slightly short at one end. Lot includes framed service memorial, with slight losses to paper at top under glass, two 1890s tinted copy images of him in uniform and overcoat in front of painted camp scene, a framed newspaper clipping regarding son James Pross's appointment in the Sons of Union Veterans, 4 of the younger Pross's commissions in the SUV, and 1 circular tin photo of the younger Pross in SUV uniform. Lot also includes Pross's GAR medal, 2 SUV medals (one with broken ribbon,) a Bannerman style wood plaque mounted with Civil War cap box with oval US plate, surrounded by Hardee eagle and 1881 side buttons. CONDITION: Good. Cap box belt loops broken at top.
