Identified M1858 McDowell forage cap to a Sergeant James Boldus, 3rd Missouri Cavalry. Cap shows heavy period wear and retains only a fragment of the inside sweatband. Original chinstrap is secured with brass high dome eagle buttons. Strap sits on a curved tarred leather bill showing only light crazing. Wool body shows some scattered moth nips overall that do not detract or affect the shape. Retains black polished cotton lining with top of crown exhibiting a thin muslin tape strip that reads: "J. BOLDUS, CO. B". Boldus was a Confederate NCO in the 3rd Missouri Cavalry. Based on a 1862 muster roll, it is determined that he was born in 1842. He entered military service on August 21, 1862 as a "3rd Sergeant" in Captain John Casey's Company, Greene's Regiment, Missouri Volunteers. This unit later became Co. C, 3rd Regt Missouri Cavalry. His term of service was "3 years of war". James Boldus died on Nov 2, 1862, at Fulton County, Arkansas, from "jaundice". Comes with folder of consignor research and copies of service records. CONDITION: Moderate wear with some scattered thin spots and moth nips. Nice example overall with rare ID.
